1663 - Erbauliche
Monaths Unterredungen,
the first publication/magazine. Intended for an educated audience.
1672 – Le
Mecure Galant,
similar to modern magazines in the respect that it had a multitude of
authors and covered different topics.
1693 – Ladie’s
Mercury, the first magazine for women.
1731 –
Magazines earned their name in
this year when Gentleman’s
Magazine was
published.
19th Century –
Magazines become available to
a middle class demographic – advertisements were also beginning to
be seen.
1890 –
First advertising agency was
established.
20th Century –
‘Yellow journalism’
(sensationalist articles published in order to increase circulation.
Seen when William Randolph Hearst exploited images of starving Cuban
troops.
- Hearst founded his publishing company with Good Housekeeping, Harper’s bazaar, and National Geographic.
- Publications such as Vogue and Vanity fair were also produced by Conde Nast.
- Fortune magazine became the first full colour, high-quality print magazine, also using photojournalism
1970s –
Celebrity magazine genre was
created, People magazine
released in 1974.
1945 –
Helene Gordon Lazareff launches Elle.
